Some Interesting Facts About Canada
I realized that when I meet people in other countries, I'll probably get the occasional question asking about my country. Strangely, having lived here for over twenty years doesn't mean I've built up a ready supply of interesting facts about Canada. So I decided to do a bit of research. Here are some interesting tidbits about this fine country.
- Canada stretches across 5000 km and six time zones, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific.
- It's one of the world's top ten biggest traders; it has a lot of natural resources to export With over nine million km² of land.
- Canada is largest sulfur exporter in the world. It's not a very glorious achievement, but you can see one or two large, yellow hills of it near the harbour in Vancouver.
- Aboriginal people lived here for thousands of years, and the country's name comes from "Kanata," the Iroquoian word for "village."
- A lot of important inventions were made by Canadians: the telephone, TV, the lightbulb, basketball, and time zones.
- With over 200,000 immigrants per year, Canada is quite a multicultural country.
- Nobody knows of a "traditional Canadian food." Unless you count pemmican.
